A New City Is a Marriage You Didn't Choose Carefully

Moving to a new city is a lot like getting married.

You arrive full of hope. You promise to adjust. You tell yourself the difficult parts are temporary, that it takes time, that everyone says it gets better.

And like most marriages, it either makes you or breaks you.

Mostly, in my experience, it breaks you first.

Not with anything dramatic. A city doesn't fight with you. It simply refuses to know your name. It lets you discover, slowly, how much of your identity was built by the streets you knew, the people who greeted you without asking who you were, and the places that once felt like home.

But the real damage doesn't happen on weekdays.

Weekdays are merciful. There is an office to go to, meetings to survive, deadlines to chase. Routine keeps your mind occupied and convinces you that you're doing okay.

It's the weekends that expose the truth.

The festivals. The evenings. The birthdays. The days when your phone is full of pictures of people laughing over dinner with families they've known forever.

And you're sitting in a rented apartment, listening to the silence.

That's when loneliness begins its conversation.

It doesn't arrive alone.

It opens old drawers.

Every mistake you've ever made walks back into the room. Every regret you've buried. Every promise you couldn't keep. Every version of yourself you've spent years trying to outgrow.

And with nobody around to interrupt those thoughts, your mind quietly becomes both the lawyer and the judge.

An uncontested mind is a brutal prosecutor.

You begin with one bad memory and somehow end up putting your entire existence on trial.

"Maybe I wasn't a good son."

"Maybe I wasn't the friend people deserved."

"Maybe I was never enough."

The frightening part is that none of it feels like self-doubt.It feels like truth.

On nights like these, thoughts stop sounding like thoughts. They become poetry.

Meri aarzoo sunne wala koi nahi yahan,
Main mar bhi jaun, toh rone wala koi nahi yahan.

Kya hi bataun tujhe, kaise kat rahi hai yeh zindagi…
Aankhon mein aansuon ka samandar hai,
Par unhe padhne wala koi nahi yahan.

Is sheher mein meri awaaz,
Deewaron se takra kar wapas laut aati hai.
Koi mera naam lekar nahi bulata,
Koi mera haal poochne nahi aata.

Har shaam tanha guzarti hai,
Har subah ek nayi jung lekar aati hai.
Bheed toh hazaaron ki hai is sheher mein,
Par apna kehne wala ek bhi nahi.

Kabhi lagta hai...
Shayad sheher bura hai.
Phir dil dheere se kehta hai—
"Sheher bura nahi tha...
Bas abhi tak use tumhara pata nahi mila."

Magar waqt guzarta gaya...
Na sheher badla,
Na log badle.
Aur dheere dheere... main bhi badal gaya.

Ab meri khamoshi meri aadat ban chuki hai.
Meri awaaz ab deewaron se bhi takrana chhod chuki hai.

Shayad kuch kahaniyan mukammal hone ke liye nahi likhi jaati.
Kuch log sirf bheed ka hissa bankar reh jaate hain.
Aur kuch naam...
Kabhi kisi ki zubaan tak pahunch hi nahi paate.

Aaj bhi isi sheher mein hoon.
Bas itna farq hai...
Pehle intezaar karta tha ki koi mujhe dhoond lega.
Ab sirf itna chahta hoon—
Ek din agar main khamosh ho jaun,
Toh meri kami mehsoos karne wala koi ho.

Maybe that's what every new city teaches us.

Not how to survive traffic, find good cafés, or memorize shortcuts.

It teaches us what it feels like to become invisible.

It forces us to meet the version of ourselves that exists when nobody is watching, nobody is calling, and nobody knows our story.

Maybe the city was never cruel.

Maybe loneliness simply held up a mirror.

And maybe the hardest part of starting over isn't finding a place to live.

It's finding someone who notices when you stop speaking.

Because every city becomes home the day someone starts waiting for you.

Until then...

Some of us keep walking through crowded streets, carrying a heart full of conversations that no one ever hears.
